Season of the Sand Blossoms: A Desert Wildflower Journey - a DVD. With another great wildflower season upon us, this DVD will inspire you to get off the beaten path to search out fields of beauty. This 42-minute DVD has three parts.

A few years back there was a 100-year bloom. Random Walk Productions shows desert flowers in all their stunning glory from that bloom. In the first selection, Season of the Sand Blossoms is set to music, showing scenes of this fantastic bloom from all over the Southwest.

Desert Gold, the second selection, is a doumentary about wildflowers, why some years are bloom, others years bust and how wildflowers are critical to the ecosystem. Several scientist and Native American tradition-keepers tell the life story of desert wildflowers.

The third section on the DVD is and identification guide to the plants and animals shown on the other selections.

This is another excellent wildflower year. Season of the Sand Blossoms will put you in the mood to go see wildflowers for youself. The identification guide will help you identify what you are seeing. And, if you had to leave the SW before the bloom started (or didn't get here) get this DVD and see what you missed. It's a stunning display. 42 minutes. $15.00

West Coast RV Camping: The Complete Guide to More than 1,800 RV Parks and Campgrounds in California, Oregon, and Washington by Tom Stienstra

West Coast Camping includes information on more than 1800 RV parks in California, Oregon and Washington. The more I look at it the more I like it. You can find RV parks in several ways:

bulletif you know the name, use the index
bulletif you are looking for a certain area, use the map at the beginning of each section or look in those pages
bulletif you have an interest such as fishing, seeing wildlife or camping along a pretty river, check that listings in that section for ones in your state

Each campground is described according to general location and nearby recreational opportunities, RV sites and facilities, reservations and fees. Directions and contact information are given. Icons give you certain information at a glance, such as whether pets are allowed.

Two things make this book unique:

bulletOne is a scenic rating. The rating is just that and does not take into consideration noise level, facilities, maintenance, recreation options, or management. It is basically rating how picturesque the campground is, not the quality of the experience.
bulletThe other unique feature is listings of his the best parks in several categories: best coastal sites, best fishing, best wildlife-viewing, prettiest lakes, prettiest rivers. For those with a specific interest, this information is quite helpful.

Stienstra does not include all campgrounds, nor those that are in extremely remote locations, very difficult to reach or where the access road is extremely narrow or twisty. Included are many state parks, some national park and other federal campgrounds. He does mention the longest RV the campground can accommodate but not how many sites of each. If you have a rig longer than 35 feet, you may want to verify that there are open sites of the size you need. Also, prices can go up anytime so verify the price if that is a concern.

If you are like most RVers we know, one campground guide is not enough. If you will be spending time in these any of these three states and want to enjoy their beauty, this is one campground guide you must add to your collection.

Take Your RV to Europe: The Low-Cost Route to Long-Term Camping by Adelle and Ron Milavsky

Great Eastern RV Trips, by Gordon Groene and Janet Groene

Great Eastern RV Trips is a handy guide for someone exploring the east by RV. Trips from Florida to the Canadian Maritimes and Quebec and as far west as the Mississippi are included. Arranged by season, you can follow the suggested itinerary or use it as a source book of places to visit and festivals and events to look for.

An example of one summer trip is "Chesapeake Bay: Feast on Seafood and Seascapes." Included are:

bulletmileage
bullettourist bureaus to contact for more detailed information
bullettips and boxes with ideas, events, and more resources

Autumn trips take you to spectacular fall colors. Winter trips include several in southern states. Spring trips include many of the mountain ranges or following the Natchez Trace. And summer trips explore northern states and Canada Though arranged by season, you need not limit yourself to that time of year.

The introduction has many good tips for RV travel and how to best use this book. For those new to long RV trips, or someone new to the east coast, this is an excellent resource. The authors stress that you must still do your homework, but this book will save any RVer a lot of research time by allowing you to pick a section that sounds particularly interesting and have resources and ideas at your fingertips.

Great Eastern RV Trips may be ordered from Amazon.

Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping by Mike and Terri Church.Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping (second edition), By Mike and Terri Church

If you are heading for Mexico you won't want to cross the border without a copy of Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping.

In the first chapter the Church's share what Mexico has to offer RVers. They then provide three possible itinerariesWest Coast, Grand Coastal and Colonial Mexicofor those who have never been.

In the second chapter, Details, Details, Details, the reader has their questions answered about many things, such as the cost of traveling in Mexico; what the campgrounds are like; traveling in caravans; getting money; water and produce; driving in Mexico and the many other details one wonders about when traveling in another country. This chapter is so complete it even shows the Spanish road signs and translates them to English.

Concerned about crossing the border? Chapter Three will quickly put you at ease. You will learn what documentation you must have; what you can and can't take; and what the border crossing process is. It then details each of the border crossings with maps, location of the Migración and Banjercito offices where you must stop; which crossings have the most space for large RVs; and what hours the crossings, Migración and Banjercito offices are open.

The rest of the book is broken out into destination chapters. These chapters start off with information about the the region covered, including highlights of the area, road information and general information of importance to RVers. The Church's are quick to point out their book is not a tourist guideother books offer this type of information. What the Church's offer is specific information of interest to RVers for traveling in Mexico. This information includes a listing of over 300 campgrounds with detailed directions (including maps) to the campgrounds. It also tells what facilities are available at the campgrounds and how accessible they are for large rigs.

The final chapter offers the same type of information about camping in Belize.

Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping is a very comprehensive and well written resource for those traveling to Mexico.
